Damn Video - Homepage Pricing UX
Decision Summary
Replace traditional pricing grid with a guided recommendation flow that: 1. Asks simple questions (no jargon) 2. Recommends a plan with confidence 3. Shows the math (transparency builds trust)
The Flow
Step 1: Video Count
"How many videos do you need?"
| Option | Maps to |
|---|---|
| 1-2 | Starter or Creator |
| 3-5 | Creator |
| 6-10 | Studio |
| 10+ | Agency |
Step 2: Site Traffic
"How busy is your site?"
| Option | Estimated daily visits | Bandwidth multiplier |
|---|---|---|
| Just starting | ~100/day | Low |
| Steady traffic | ~1,000/day | Medium |
| Busy | ~5,000/day | High |
| Very busy | ~10,000+/day | Very high |
Step 3: Recommendation + Explanation

Key Design Decisions
1. Reverse Pricing Psychology
Instead of "here are 4 plans, figure it out" → "this one works for you"
- Lead with the recommendation
- Upgrade path is secondary ("Need more?")
- Reduces decision paralysis
2. Show the Math
Expandable "How do we know?" section that: - Shows their inputs back to them - Reveals the calculation - Displays percentage of plan used - Builds trust through transparency
3. Both Technical + Layman
- Show "250GB" (technical)
- AND "plenty of room" / "you're at 18%" (human)
- Satisfies both personas
Why This Works for Each Persona
OCP Mary (Non-Technical)
| Need | How this addresses it |
|---|---|
| Confidence she picked right | "The website told me this is enough" |
| Board justification | Can screenshot the math |
| Fear of overpaying | Sees she's only using 18% — not oversold |
| No jargon overwhelm | Questions are in plain English |
Agency Dev (Technical)
| Need | How this addresses it |
|---|---|
| Speed | Quick 2-step flow, done in 30 seconds |
| Validation | Math confirms his instinct |
| Trust | "These people get it" — transparent, no BS |
| Client setup | Fast enough to do for a client and move on |
Current Pricing (Reference)
| Plan | Videos | Bandwidth | Price |

| Agency | 20 | 1TB | $50/mo |
Open Questions (For Later)
-
Upload-first variant: Still an option to explore — upload video first, get real file size, even more accurate recommendation. Adds sunk cost psychology.
-
"Coming from Vimeo?" entry point: Separate flow for Agency Devs who are explicitly escaping Vimeo complexity.
-
Calculation assumptions: Need to nail down the bandwidth math (average video size, views-to-bandwidth ratio).
