SPC Retail — Top 10 Reasons Not to Migrate to Shopify

Date: 2026-04-09 Context: Client considering WordPress/WooCommerce → Shopify migration as part of a redesign. Recommendation: stay on WordPress.

1. Goal mismatch Client wants a fresh look, not new commerce plumbing. A WP redesign delivers that without rebuilding products, forms, or integrations.

2. Gravity Forms rebuild 17 forms and 2,500+ entries need replatforming, plus HubSpot wiring rebuilt from scratch. Shopify has no native form builder equivalent.

3. Industry portfolio pages 11 portfolio pages use ACF galleries, repeaters, and case study ties. No Shopify-native equivalent — custom Liquid metaobjects only.

4. Blogging is a downgrade 122 posts across 4 categories. Shopify's blog has no categories, no related posts, and thin taxonomy. Feature loss, not parity.

5. Flipbook content has no home 14 interactive dFlip catalogs have no Shopify equivalent. Marketing assets would need third-party hosting or retirement.

6. Category hierarchy flattens 7 parent → 42 child categories collapse on Shopify. Collections are flat; parent-nav and dual-listing workarounds required.

7. SEO migration risk 450+ URLs need 301 redirects. /product-category/ → /collections/ isn't a clean swap — real ranking-loss risk at cutover.

8. AvaTax forces Shopify Plus Native Avalara integration only ships on Shopify Plus at $2,300/mo — roughly 20× the cost of a standard plan.

9. "Contact to order" products 27 non-shippable products aren't a native Shopify concept. Each needs Liquid conditionals or a Request-a-Quote app.

10. Lock-in and reduced flexibility Liquid is less flexible than PHP/ACF, and leaving Shopify later is materially harder than leaving WordPress. One-way door.
