The Cliff & Judy Radcliff Green Room Campaign

How It Started…
It all started nearly 50 years ago in an acting class at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. Judy rushed into class late, and after a moment, Cliff, who had been there early, leaned over to the classmate next to him and said, “I’m going to marry that girl.”
After a few years of friendship, performances, and master’s degrees in fine arts, Cliff and Judy became inseparable. They traveled from Lincoln to Kansas City to New York and, finally, back to Omaha to raise their son, David, and, coming along a few years later, their daughter, Maddie.
For about 16 years, Cliff and Judy set aside acting and performance to focus on their careers and kids. It wasn’t until a fateful party thrown by their long-time friend Judy Hart that this changed. Their daughter, Maddie, tagged along to finally meet some of the people she’d heard about so often. Judy Hart mentioned that she would be directing a show at the Omaha Community Playhouse that year,Arsenic and Old Lace. She mentioned Cliff auditioning, and Maddie happened to overhear.
After spending the first 16 years of her life only seeing her parents’ performances through still shots in three-ring binders they both kept chronicling their performances, Maddie couldn’t resist the urge to nag her dad to audition until he agreed.
After Cliff’s performance as Teddy in Arsenic and Old Lace, Judy followed with her return to the stage as a nun in The Sound of Music. Since then, the pair has graced the stages of Omaha in over 50 performances. While Cliff passed away in 2006 at the young age of 54, the mark he left on the community is eternal. Meanwhile, Judy continues to spellbind audiences.

How It’s Going…
This year, Judy Radcliff turns 70 – a fact she may not love her daughter posting on the internet, but true nonetheless. Maddie has been thinking about how to celebrate, not only her mother, but Omaha’s stage mom, who has enveloped countless performers with love, encouragement, and support for decades. It didn’t seem right to only get her a present or take her to dinner. What seemed right was to give her a gift of returns – an outpouring of the love she’s given freely to so many. And to make it dramatic, we’ll do it in the form of a cabaret!
On April 20th, 2024, at 7 PM, we’ll collectively surprise Judy with an evening of song, dance, and performance celebrating her iconic career. Featured performers, accompanied by Jim Boggess, include Camille Metoyer Moten, Leanne Hill Carlson, Steve Krambeck, Erika Sieff, Jim McKain, Bailey Carlson, Thomas Gjere, Carrie Beth Stickrod, Maddie Radcliff, Joe Lullo, and Devona Joy Reilly’s stage debut!
The evening will consist of songs, specially curated for Judy, and scenes from the roles she’s loved most.

The Naming Rights Campaign…
A naming rights campaign is a form of fundraising with a special purpose. The funds raised are directly dedicated to honoring a person or persons by putting their name on an fixed item or space. In this case, the greenroom at the Benson Theatre will be named The Cliff & Judy Radcliff Greenroom. It will be redesigned to be a comfortable, engaging, and lovely space for actors to share, prepare, and bond – the most fitting tribute we can imagine for Cliff and Judy.
The total ask is high – $100,000 is the price tag for naming rights on the greenroom. But I believe, in true artist and grassroots style, we’re capable of launching this campaign with a strong boost to that goal. We will continue to run the campaign through the remainder of the year until the goal is reached – so it’s never too late to pass the message along to a new (or old!) friend.
